How long does it take to become a Black Belt in Taekwondo?

Each student comes to Taekwondo with a different level of skill or talent and will progress at their own pace. Remember, this is an individual art and not a race! Achieving a Black Belt requires a deep level of commitment. On average you can expect to receive a black belt within 3 to 5 years. There is a true sense of personal achievement to persevere and earn that black belt. We believe in making good martial artists not passing you through quickly.

How many classes should I take?

Most instructors would like their students to take a minimum of 2 classes per week. Also, you should continue to practice at home to maintain flexibility and retain the new techniques you have learned.

How often do you belt test?

We test every 3 months.

At what age do you begin teaching Taekwondo?

We have students as young as 5 years old. Each child matures at a different age and what works for one 5 year old may not work for another. Very young children have short attention spans so we incorporate various fun activities, such as jumping, rolling, or "instructor says" (a version of simon says) at the end of class if the students have worked on their basic techniques.

How safe is Taekwondo?

The chance of injuring yourself is small. Our students work out on a mat covered floor that absorbs the impact from jumping or falling. Our equipment used for kicking and punching is padded. All students are supervised by our instructors to ensure the safest environment possible. We teach self control when using contact on your opponent. In Taekwondo it is necessary to spar with an opponent to learn speed, timing, and control. Sparring is required to advance to the next belt level (except white belts). All students wear padded protective gear and young students are supervised by an instructor. Also, the younger students are paired with students close to their own size.

Why do you break boards in Taekwondo?

Breaking boards is a demonstration of mental strength and proper technique. It is not a show of muscle strength. Our women and children are very good at breaking boards. We use re-breakable boards and we use different types of boards depending on your level. Some boards are very easy to break and progress up to ones that are very hard to break.
